Around Decorah, his name is synonymous with high school golf.  His face is instantly recognizable at ribbon cuttings, board meetings, and military services.  He is a constant figure around town, walking with his wife and cheerfully chatting up everyone he meets.  How well do you really KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR?

Ten community members came forth to address the council with their questions and concerns… “I’d like to commend and applaud the people involved … entering a very complex debate, and going through it in a solution-based way …I think we as a community need to trust the process … In March 2013, there was a proposal to address the John Cline West Side School, so we can’t vote on the bond until next November 2024, take a couple of years to build a school, so we are looking at 2026.  We owe it to our teachers, our staff, our administrators, our kids, our community to get this done. Stop sign installation at the intersection of Broadway Street and Winnebago Street was discussed. Recent construction at the intersection consisted of bumping out the crosswalks to make pedestrians more visible as well as making the crosswalks safer to use.

With a quiver in his voice, Wasson’s eyes fill with tears as he continued, “Sometimes I will find a hill in town, drive my tractor up there and listen to the tractor bellow. It’s loud, but it’s a thrill. I love the sound.”

Decorah Council awards bids, alters council/mayor compensation plan

Currently, the mayor receives a yearly payment of $4,800, and the council members receive $50 per meeting. The ordinance considered would increase the mayor’s payment to $5,200 and council members would be paid for work sessions and committee meetings where the whole body of members is required to attend.

Come this Saturday, Lucas will, for his very last time, wake in the darkness of early morning, suit up in his USPS blue and deliver mail. After handing out the last letter and passing out the remainder of packages, when he clocks out at 3 p.m., Bert the Mailman will officially hang up his mail bag and retire as mail carrier.
