Law enforcement seat belt campaign under way

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It, Don’t Risk It high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, is May 20-June 2, 2024.

Library hosts June book discussions

Decorah Public Library staff will host five book discussions in June. The groups are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested should call the library at 382-3717 to learn more or to reserve a book. Email ktorresdal@decorahlibrary.org to be added to any of the five groups’ email distribution lists. Funds for multiple copy sets were  provided by Friends of Decorah Public Library.

Decorah’s 175th celebration June 15

The City of Decorah will commemorate the town’s 175th Anniversary – the Dodransbicentennial – Saturday, June 15.
The public is invited to a short program at 10 a.m. at Vesterheim Commons on Water Street on the morning of the 15th. Visits to historic locations around the community are encouraged, and special tours, events and family activities are planned.

Luther receives one of largest planned gifts

The receipt of one of the largest planned gift commitments in college history has lifted Luther College to its greatest single year of fund-raising with just over $33 million committed, President Jenifer K. Ward announced prior to the 2024 Commencement.

New English Language Arts curriculum adopted at Decorah Community Schools

After considerable discussion, the board approved a new English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum at a cost of $171,832.71.

May 19 commencements set

Area students earn math honors

Area students from Carrie Lee Elementary Extended Learning Program, led by Kari O’Hara, competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest recently. Two local participants earned the National Honor title.

DHS celebrates Class of 2024 achievements at May 19 commencement

Decorah High School has announced plans for the 143rd commencement ceremony, which will take place in the main gym on Sunday, May 19. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 12:30 p.m. A total of 134 students will receive their diplomas in recognition of their hard work and commitment.

Kids Lunch Club returns this summer

Kids Lunch Club is back for summer 2024. All area children and youth (18 and under) are invited to pick up a free “Grab and Go” style lunch on weekdays throughout the summer.

 

Yard Waste Site to begin scheduled hours

The City of Decorah Yard Waste Site will have set open hours starting Saturday, May 18.. The Yard Waste Site will be open on Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
