September book discussions slated

Highway 24 accident results in fatality

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls at approximately 5:40 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, regarding a semi that drove off a bridge over Goddard Creek southwest of Fort Atkinson on Highway 24.

Last year, during the final weeks of summer (August 1-September 4, 2022), there were 40 traffic fatalities in Iowa; and according to the a spokesman for the Decorah Police Department 30% of those fatalities were alcohol/drug related.

Special program at Porter House Aug. 19

What do a bull in a China shop, the Amazon rainforest, and a butterfly pupa all have in common? Each will be featured in a series of children’s stories shared with families at the Porter House Museum in Decorah on Saturday, Aug. 19. Guests are invited to listen, learn and lunch at the event.

Luther students earn TRIO scholarships

Luther College announces that 11 students received scholarships through the TRIO Achievement Program for the 2023-24 school year. Luther is approaching the 50th anniversary of its involvement with TRIO, a federally funded program that provides support and programming to foster academic success, personal development and community engagement to around 165 first-generation and income-eligible students each year. Six students received the Steven Mark Anderson Scholarship and five students received the Karen Julesberg Scholarship.

 

Ashley Elsbernd crowned Iowa Dairy Princess

Ashley Elsbernd, the 19-year-old daughter of Peter and Kristi Elsbernd from Calmar, was crowned the 70th Iowa Dairy Princess during an evening ceremony at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

DHS fall musical announced

Car theft suspect in Winneshiek County Jail
