200 Flower Baskets are up in Downtown Decorah

DDBA Board Director Andy Nelson with Decorah High School Student and Watering Crew Member Eli Sassaman.

More than 200 flower baskets went up in the downtown district yesterday, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The flowers, wave petunias in a variety of colors, were grown by Andera Greenhouse near Spillville. Andera Greenhouse also starts flower baskets for 9 other Northeast Iowa communities including: Calmar, Spillville, Protivin, Ossian, Elkader, Ridgeway, New Hampton, Manchester, Lawler.

Decorah’s flower baskets are watered every other day during the summer by a small team. This year they will accomplish the task with a fleet of three customized electric golf carts which are outfitted with large water tanks, pumps, and special watering wands. The summer watering crew for 2023 is Jenna Hartz, Leslie Campbell, Eli Sassaman, Brady Bohner, and Mikael Havens. The crew completed orientation this morning with Downtown Decorah Betterment Board Directors Mike Harman, Andy Nelson, and Matthew Burkey.

The Hanging Flower Basket program is possible because of DDBA annual memberships as well as generous partnership and support from the City of Decorah, Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, and Decorah’s SSMID. To become a member of DDBA and support this downtown beautification program, interested businesses and individuals should visithttps://www.decorahareachamber.com/community/downtown-district/ or call the chamber office at 563-382-3990. Downtown Decorah Betterment Association is a local nonprofit that works within downtown Decorah’s commercial district.

One of these days we will stop at Andera Greenhouse to meet the Andera’s and buy some flowers, too.
