Amended ordinance aimed at clarifying right of way near Carrie Lee

By Denise Lana,

The Decorah City Council unanimously approved amending a city ordinance on Monday, requiring all vehicles stopped at a temporary stop sign located in a school zone to yield to vehicles not otherwise obliged to stop or yield. City officials said the amendment was aimed at making the ordinance more clear, specifically citing a temporary stop sign at the intersection of River and Vernon Streets, adjacent to Carrie Lee Elementary School, where city officials said there has been some confusion as to which vehicles have the right of way. Cars traveling north or south on River Street must stop and yield to all busses traveling west on Vernon Street, especially during morning bus drop off and afternoon bus pick-up periods.
