Voter turnout was high in the 2024 General Election in Winneshiek County, with 12,075 ballots cast, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night from Winneshiek County Auditor Ben Steines. There are 15,194 registered voters in the county. Absentee ballots cast in Tuesday’s election totaled 7,381.
Voters approved the $38 million dollar Decorah Community School District bond referendum for a proposed new elementary school, with 66.73% in favor and 33.7% opposed. A super-majority vote of 60% is required for a bond referendum to pass. There were 5,087 “yes” votes compared to 2,536 “no’ votes.
Voters also re-elected Shirley Vermace(DEM) in the District 3 Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors race. She received 1,285 votes, compared to 793 votes for her Republican opponent, Dan Hovden.
In state races, U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson (REP) was re-elected with 6,750 votes. Her Democratic opponent, Sarah Corkery, received 4,760 in the county.
Republican Mike Klimesh was re-elected to his State Senate District 32 seat with 6,853 votes, compared to 4,791 for his Democratic opponent, Brian Bruening.
Republican Michael Bergan was re-elected to his State Representative District 63 office with 8,476 votes. He was unopposed on the ballot, however there were 1,169 write-in votes cast.
In the race for U.S. President, Republican Donald J. Trump came out ahead in Winneshiek County, receiving 6,426 Winneshiek County votes, compared to 5,319 votes for Kamala Harris (DEM).
