Canton School gets second lease on life

The former Canton school has new owners, Sparrow Valley Properties, represented by Joel Pfeffer in the transaction according to the county sale records. Sparrow Valley Properties purchased the property for $2,000 at the March 1 Fillmore County Tax Forfeiture Auction held in Preston, Minn. They plan on giving the neglected historic building a second chance according to the Canton, Minn., city Facebook page.
Sparrow Valley Properties, reported as an energetic couple newer to the Canton area according to the Facebook post, plans on renovating the building to create housing units. They are currently working on a similar project in Lanesboro, after purchasing parcel 19.0136.000 in Lanesboro during the March 1 sale as well.
The City of Canton has communicated with the new owners and invited them to attend a future city council meeting to introduce themselves and discuss their restoration plans. The city posted, “We know this is promising news for all Canton High School alumni and Mabel-Canton grads who attended elementary school in Canton. Here’s to hoping this is a sign of continued good things to come for our community!”
At the March 1 auction, all parcels save one narrow strip located in Spring Valley sold. This parcel is available for over-the-counter purchase on a first come, first serve basis. Call the Fillmore County auditor/treasurer’s office with any questions at 507-765-3811.
