Card shower for Stromseths

Don and Sally Stromseth of Decorah are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary June 20.

Don and Sally Stromseth of Decorah will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 20, 2021. Their children are hosting a card shower in their honor. The public is welcome to send cards to them at the following address: Don and Sally Stromseth, 3292 218th Avenue, Decorah, Iowa 52101.

Sally L’Heureux met Don Stromseth at Illinois State University, where Sally was a student and Don, a Peace Corps volunteer who served in Chile from 1966-68, was recruiting.

In 1970, Sally’s aunt, a high school choir director, offered Sally the opportunity to travel Europe as a chaperone for the choir’s tour. Don, who was by then serving in the United States Army and stationed in Germany, took leave and met Sally and the choir in Calais, France. The couple announced their engagement in Paris.

Don and Sally were married on June 20, 1971, at First United Methodist Church in Dixon, Illinois. After living briefly in Cedar Falls, at which time Don earned a photography degree from Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Waterloo, they settled in Decorah, Don’s hometown, and took over the family farm. The couple also operated a wedding photography business for many years. Sally learned the art of rosemaling, developing it into a home-based business.

Don is retired from Decorah Tire Service and continues to farm cropland. Sally is retired from Decorah Public Library and continues her rosemaling business. They are active members of First United Methodist Church, Decorah. Their children are Sara Stromseth-Troy (Nate Troy) of Cresco and Mary (Dan) Marx of Decorah. They have two grandchildren, James and Will Marx.
