NMP show “Fun Home” cast set

New Minowa Players and Director Rick Scheffert recently announced the cast of their upcoming production, “Fun Home.” The show is based on the graphic novel of the same name, an autobiographical narrative of Alison Bechdel’s life.

When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Directors said “Fun Home” is a refreshingly honest, wholly-original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

The character Alison appears at three ages. Alison, the adult, is played by Miranda McGrath. Medium Alison is Indigo Fish, and Small Alison is Clara Garcia-Pratts. Alison’s mother and father, Helen and Bruce Bechdel, are played by Julia Wharton and Gabriel Twedt. Lailyn McGrath plays Christian, and Lorenzo Fernandez plays John, Alison’s brothers. Joan, a college love interest, is played by Addison Cross, and David Mendez plays Roy, Mark, Pete, and Bobby Jeremy.

“Fun Home” will be performed April 4 to 7 at New Minowa Players Theatre, 906 South Mill Street in Decorah. Evening performances Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, will begin at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 6 will have both a 2 p.m. matinee and a 7 p.m. evening performance. The Sunday, April 7, performance is a 2 p.m. matinee.
