The Decorah Sustainability Commission (DSC) recently endorsed a project that hopes to increase residential composting in Decorah and throughout Winneshiek County. This effort ties in directly to one of the DSC’s action items looking to reduce landfill waste. Organic material including household food waste makes up 26-34% of our landfill’s waste stream.

The project makes high-quality home composter bins available at a reduced price to Winneshiek County residents and is being coordinated by Winneshiek County Conservation and the Center for Sustainable Communities at Luther College.

Visit winneshiekwaste.com/compost for more information and to pre-order a composting bin.

You can also visit the Decorah Public Library, Luther College, NICC, or the Winneshiek County Recycling Center in Freeport to see what the bins look like or to access paper order forms. Bins will be delivered later this spring.
