Former Decorah man accused of murdering teen demands earlier trial date

By Seth Boyes,

A man accused of murdering a teenage girl in 2017 has invoked his right to a trial within 90 days.

James David Bachmurski, a former Decorah area resident, filed a demand for speedy trial on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The 65-year-old was most recently scheduled to appear before a jury of his peers on March 12, 2025. Winneshiek County Attorney Andy Van Der Maaten said the trial will now need to take place no later than Dec. 9 of this year, unless Bachmurski withdraws his request.

Bachmurski was extradited from Georgia earlier this summer and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail on June 20, initially on charges unrelated to the alleged murder — he was served a warrant for the murder of 15-year-old Jade Colvin the next month.
