Iowa Legislative Session presentation June 6

The Decorah Public Library, the Decorah Human Rights Commission, and ACLU of Iowa will host the second event in the Language Matters Series, called “Legislation Matters: The 2023 Iowa Legislative Session’s Impact on Civil Rights” in the mezzanine at Decorah Public Library on Tuesday, June 6, at 6 p.m.

Do you want to know more about the laws passed in this year’s legislative session in Iowa? Event organizers invite the public to join the ACLU of Iowa Advocacy Campaign Manager Becca Eastwood, and DHRC member and attorney Dakota Moore, for their presentation on key pieces of legislation from this session including laws affecting transgender youth, school curriculum, free speech and more. The presenters will give a rundown of what these laws state and their potential impact on civil and human rights, followed by a question-and-answer time.

Becca Eastwood (she/her) is the Advocacy Campaign Manager with the ACLU of Iowa. She works with Iowans across the state to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties. Through education, outreach, & advocacy Becca works to make sure Iowans know their rights and are empowered to advocate for civil liberties. (And she grew up in Decorah!)

Attorney Dakota Moore is relatively new to Decorah, but he has called Northeast Iowa home nearly all of his life. Originally from Elgin, Moroe is a small-town attorney in Postville at the Erickson Law Office. Moore was a member of the first graduating class of North Fayette Valley High School in 2014. He graduated cum laude with degrees in history and International relations from Wartburg College in 2018, and graduated with his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2021. In 2022, Moore and his wife Jordyn, and their three cats moved to Decorah. He joined the DHRC in 2023
