Decorah Water Department employee Dennis Myhre was 18 years old when he was hired to work for the Water Department in September 1972. “They needed some young guy to do all the dirty work, shoveling, mowing, whatever,” explained Myhre. “I got hired on Labor Day 1972 … and I have been there ever since!” Myhre performed random jobs for the Water Department until 1978 before his stint working at both old and new Waste Water Treatment Plants. He remained at WWTP until 1992 before returning to the Water Department, where he has remained ever since. Mayor Lorraine Borowski presented Myhre with a lapel pin during the most recent City Council meeting, telling the packed meeting room, “I always knew whenever spring had come, because I would see Myhre bleeding fire hydrants!” Myhre officially retires May 26, and says he is looking forward to attending ballgames and going fishing with his granddaughter and five grandsons.
