New Minowa Players season announced

There is a lot in store for theatre-goers in the Driftless region as the New Minowa Players recently announced their 2023-2024 season which runs August, 2023 through June, 2024.

Carrie: The Musical

New Minowa Players’ season begins in August with the Young People’s Production of Carrie: The Musical, featuring actors in junior high, high school, and college. Performances are Aug 10-13, with 7 p.m. performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are are now available at and at the Oneota Community Co-op in Decorah.

Synopsis: Carrie White is a teenage outcast who longs to fit in. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s dominated by her loving but cruelly controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Carrie: The Musical is based on the Stephen King novel Carrie.

Two Stories About the Gold Buckskin Whincher

October brings the children’s show, featuring actors in first through eighth grade. Two Stories About the Gold Buckskin Whincher is a short musical written by Rick and Sheryl Scheffert, based on two Carl Sandburg stories from his collection The Rutabaga Stories. Performances will be October 19-21 at 7 p.m. and October 22 at 2 p.m.

Synopsis: The Gold Buckskin Whincher has a power, and it’s working. Blixie Bimber finds love. Jason Squiff has a popcorn hat, popcorn mittens, and popcorn shoes.

200th Performance Cabaret Celebration

November brings the organization’s 200th performance! It will be a cabaret celebration. Stay tuned for details. It will be performed the first weekend of November.

Disney’s Descendants: The Musical

Disney’s Descendants: The Musical will be the 2024 January show with performances January 18-21 and January 26-27.

Synopsis: Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s Descendants: The Musical is a brand-new musical jam-packed with comedy, adventure, Disney characters, and hit songs from the films! Imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost – home of the most infamous villains who ever lived – the teenaged children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella De Vil have never ventured off the island… until now. When the four troublemakers are sent to attend prep school alongside the children of beloved Disney heroes, they have a difficult choice to make: should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good?

Fun Home

The musical Fun Home will be the spring show, performed April 4-7.

Synopsis: When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.

Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

Bright Star

Rounding off the season is the summer musical, which will be Bright Star. It will be performed on the Decorah High School stage June 27-30, 2024.

Synopsis: Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s.
