Sons of Norway to host Syttende Mai celebration

Join the Sons of Norway Valdres Lodge meeting on Tuesday, May 21, for a Syttende Mai celebration.
The evening’s events, held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Hall, begin at 6 p.m., with a catered Norwegian meal. Reservations are requested before Tuesday, May 14. The public is invited to share the dinner with Lodge members. The cost for the dinner is $15 and payment may be brought to the event. To reserve dinner(s), contact Carol Maki by phone (563-277-1197) or by email (camaki44@gmail.com).

A presentation by Tom Spindler, Past President, Education Coordinator, and Tour Guide for the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation, is planned following the dinner. The talk is titled “Norman Borlaug, Humanitarian Hero for the Hungry.” Borlaug was an American agronomist who led initiatives worldwide contributing to the extensive increases in agricultural production. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal, one of only seven people to have received all three awards.

Spindler currently cares for the birthplace and boyhood farms of Norman Borlaug, gives tours, and coordinates education programs called, “Inspire Days” for 5th graders. From 1975-2007, Spindler was an elementary teacher in the Howard-Winneshiek District in Cresco. He then spent 11 years as guide/teacher for school groups traveling to Gettysburg and DC as part of “America’s Heritage Tour.”
