South Winn FFA Chapter named state champions

The South Winneshiek FFA Chapter from Calmar was named the Champion Team in the annual Iowa FFA Biotechnology Career Development Event held at Iowa State University in Ames earlier this spring.

Members of the first place team included: Katrina Hageman, Kelsey Timp, Autumn Schmitt, and Kendric Langreck. Their agricultureeducation instructor and FFA advisor is Mrs. Melissa Hageman. The Clear Creek Amana FFA Chapter from Tiffin was named the Reserve Champion Team. Members of the second place team included: Jackson Arndt, Ryleigh Bode, Katie Evans, and Hannah Grabin.

Their agriculture education instructors and FFA advisors are Alyssa Amelon and Morgan Hibbs. Kelsey Timp, South Winneshiek FFA, Calmar, was named the High Individual Overall in the competition.FFA teams from 62 chapters participated in this year’s Career Development Event April 15, designed to provide the student anopportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Biotechnology. The 237 individuals who participated in the event completed several activities including a general knowledge exam and an identification activity.The team members also collaborated in a team activity relating to biotechnology principles.
The Iowa FFA Ag Biotechnology Career Development Event was made possible with support from Darling Ingredients through the Iowa FFA Foundation. The Ag Biotechnology Career Development Event was coordinated and conducted by Leah Sandall of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Andrea Rouse of Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).
