As the holiday season approaches, the public is invited to experience the excitement of Christmas on Historic Broadway in Spring Valley, Minn. Nestled in the heart of town, the downtown area will be transformed Saturday, Dec. 9, into a festive wonderland, offering a holiday event for families and friends.
The 18th annual Christmas on Historic Broadway will be a day filled with yuletide joy, twinkling lights and the warmth of community spirit.
This year’s celebration will include:
• Trail of Trees: Walk through Spring Creek Park to view beautifully-decorated trees set up by local businesses, organizations and individuals. There will also be firepits for making s’mores, and St. John’s Lutheran School will be utilizing the Popcorn Wagon as a fundraiser. The Trail of Trees will be set up all day.
• Mitten Tree: There will be a Mitten Tree set up at Spring Creek Park, at the Trail of Trees and at the Spring Valley Community Center. Attendees are encouraged to take warm winter items if they are in need. Donations are also being accepted to add to the Mitten Trees. Anyone who would like to help add items to the Mitten Tree, or provide monetary donation, contact the Christmas on Historic Broadway planning group.
• Frozen Feet 4K Walk/Run: Come out, brave the weather, and walk or run in the Frozen Feet 4K. Walker/runners should check in at the Mundfrom Building at 124 N. Broadway Avenue in Spring Valley. A pre-race meeting will take place and the race will start at 11 a.m. Make sure to wear the ugliest Christmas sweater or outfit. Medals will be given to the ugliest sweater, overall female and overall male runners. Drink coupons will also be given to all of the runners for a Stellar Punch (21+) or a mocktail Stellar Punch (under 21). Day of registration is accepted, however pre-registration is preferred. Participants can register online at springvalleyeda.org/events/frozen-feet-4k-run-walk/
• Sledding and Sleigh Rides: The south Broadway hill will be closed to allow sledding. A favorite of young and young at heart, make sure to stop by and go for a sled ride. Helmets are required for sledders. Then take a ride on the horse drawn sleigh and see the Downtown area as it would have been in a simpler time. Times may vary for both due to the weather.
• Supper with Santa: Bring the little ones to the Spring Valley Community Center, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., to visit with Santa and share their Christmas wishes with him. Afterwards, enjoy a warm meal of soup or mac and cheese, breadsticks and a drink. There will also be a silent auction for a variety of Christmas items to bid on.
• Light Parade and Light Up Spring Valley: At 6 p.m., there will be a Light Parade that heads right through downtown. Then, take some time to drive through Spring Valley and see all of the homes and businesses that have decorated for the Christmas season. A map will be made available as the event gets closer.
• HEE HAW Christmas: Brave Community Theatre will be performing their take on an old television classic, “HEE HAW”. Show times are 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
