Star City Film Festival in Lansing July 14-16

The 5th Annual Star City Film Festival has been scheduled, this time with new Lansing locations: The Red Barn Resort and TJ Hunter’s. Sacred Noise Society founder, actress, producer and director Katie O’Regan will showcase her 2022 film, “Painting Jane,” during the festival. She noted that this film festival would be dedicated to her late father, Francis O’Regan.

An adaptation of the play “Good Morning, Miss America,” written by Portland, Ore., artist Phyllis Yes, O’Regan’s film, “Painting Jane,” portrays Jane Nelson, Portland artist and art professor, as she tries to navigate living across the country from her parents going through the major health problems and major past family issues. This year’s film festival brings together the work of 40 filmmakers and script writers, with more than half the filmmakers planning to attend the star-studded event.

Festival schedule

Friday, July 14: Check-in for festival attendees and a meet-and-greet with filmmakers begins at 5:30 p.m., at The Red Barn Resort. “Stories at Sunset” begins at 7 p.m., and features outdoor staged readings with actors making the work of festival-selected scriptwriters come alive. “Tea Meyer” a feel-good story set in 1920 about a traveling salesman and his customer, is one of the featured film scripts to be read out loud on The Red Barn Campground stage. This will be a new television pilot casting Katie O’Regan, which was filmed in April. The cast and crew of the pilot series will be at the festival.

Script readings continue until 9:30 p.m., when the feature film, “Reveille,” by Michael Akkerman will be screened on an outdoor screen.

Saturday, July 15: Films will be screened all day, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall and will continue until 6 p.m. Beginning at 2 p.m. at Lansing Office Works, four feature films will be screened, as well. Film fest attendees may choose either location, depending on which films they would like to see.

A red-carpet event with full glamour and dress begins at 6 p.m., at T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall. At 6:45 p.m., the feature film, “Painting Jane,” produced and directed by Katie O’Regan, will be screened, followed by a special guest music performance with dance music. An after-party will cap off the evening.

Sunday July 16: Coffee on the River and a breakfast with filmmakers will be held, details to be determined. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall will host two more film screenings with talkbacks. An awards ceremony will begin at noon at the Banquet Hall and will conclude the film festival.
