Sunflower seeks donations for Child Development and Discovery Center project

As the year draws to a close, the community is urged to join hands in supporting Sunflower’s Child Development and Discovery Center project through donations. From now until Dec. 31, a local donor is willing to match up to $100,000 towards the project.

According to a Sunflower press release, the project consists of building a new childcare center that will have 245 childcare slots available to the Decorah area with an adjoining Discovery Center, which is a small children’s museum open to the public.

“This critical initiative serves as a beacon of hope for families in northeast Iowa who need accessible, high-quality childcare services,” said Sunflower Board President Stephanie Fromm. “No matter the size, every contribution holds the power to create a lasting impact.”

Fromm said that by donating before the year’s end, donors will double their contribution. Donations will be used to purchase play and learning equipment in the Discovery Center, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) focused learning space accessible to the public, local schools and other early childhood education programs. The construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed by June 2024. Donations will also enable Sunflower to continue providing a nurturing environment where children can learn, grow and thrive, Fromm added.

“As a community, we have an opportunity to impact the lives of our youngest community members,” said Fromm. “Your donations to Sunflower’s project can pave the way for a brighter future for children and families in our community.”

Sunflower is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible. Acceptable donations for the Sunflower Capital Campaign include check, cash, IRA contributions and stock transfers.

Donations can be dropped off at or mailed to: Attn: John Schroeher, Decorah Bank and Trust, 202 E. Water St. Decorah, IA 52101.
