Interim Winneshiek County Engineer Nick Rissman presented the Board of Supervisors Monday, Oct. 9, with contract bids for vehicle gas, diesel fuel, LP and ice control materials for Nov. 1, 2023, through Oct. 31, 2024. Bids were received from two vendors for diesel fuel delivered to each shop building. AgVantage of Waverly was awarded the unleaded, diesel fuel and LP contract with the low bid again this year, with delivery costs bid at $16,454 for fuel and $20,160 for LP.
Rissman noted that the size of the tanks makes a difference when trucking up to 9,000 gallons of fuel to the shops, with smaller tanks making for more frequent stops and more miles in the contract. The Freeport shop currently has two underground tanks for fuel, but the other county road shops have 2,000 gallon diesel tanks.
Only one ice control bid was received from Bruening Rock Products. The bid came in at between $14.439 and $14.999/ton, with 22,000 tons under contract. The total bid of $324,498 was unanimously passed by the supervisors. It was noted the cost had increased from approximately $290,000 from the last contract signed, which is just over a 10 percent increase for the new contract year.
The new Salt Shed at Locust is complete and ready for deliveries for the winter season. Discussion was held concerning being more judicious with the ice control materials to maximize the use of them on the roads. Rissman noted, “The main location for ice control is at intersections, curves, hills, but we don’t have to put it on straight stretches, people need to drive for the weather too to save on excess materials needed.”
