Decorah-based Toppling Goliath Brewing was named the prestigious 2023 Grand National Champion after securing four gold medals at the 2023 U.S. Beer Championship in Oxford, Ohio recently.
Four Iowa craft breweries were awarded eight medals at the event. The best beers in categories covering in 160 different styles were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals at a ceremony on Monday, July 10. Iowa breweries brought home six gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
The 2023 U.S. Open Beer Championship judged more styles than any other beer competition in the world. This year’s event included 3,107 entries. The following Iowa craft breweries received industry-wide medal recognition:
- Toppling Goliath Brewing, Decorah: Pseudo Sue, American Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale, Gold Medal
- Full Fledged Brewing Company, Council Bluffs: Floyd The Barbarian, Single Hop Pale Ale Category, Gold Medal
- Toppling Goliath Brewing, Decorah: Seismic Sue, Triple IPA Category, Gold Medal
- Toppling Goliath Brewing, Decorah: King Sue, New England/Juicy DIPA Category, Gold Medal
- Exile Brewing, Des Moines: Forage, English Brown Ale Category, Silver Medal
- Big Grove Brewery, Iowa City: Citrus Surfer, American Beer/Fruit Beer Grapefruit Category, Gold Medal
- Full Fledged Brewing Company, Council Bluffs: Buffal-Oak Bourbon Stout, Barrel Aged Dark Beer Category, Bronze Medal
- Toppling Goliath Brewing, Decorah: KBBS Reserve 2022, Barrel Aged Strong Breakfast Stouts Category, Gold Medal
“For the second time this year, Iowa breweries have been recognized as some of the best and brightest,” said Iowa Brewers Guild Executive Director, Noreen Otto. “When Iowans drink local, they’re drinking some of the best craft beer in the world.”
