Upper Iowa Conference denies Decorah request

By Roz Weis,

The Decorah Community School District received notification Wednesday that the District’s application to join the Upper Iowa Athletic Conference (UIC) for the 2025-2026 school year has been denied.

The UIC officials met Wednesday to discuss the request.

In a statement, DCSD Superintendent Tim Cronin said, “We remain committed to exploring all avenues for future conference affiliation. Under Iowa law, all school districts are guaranteed membership in an athletic conference.”

Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) member-schools are currently Central, Clayton Ridge, Eastern Allamakee, MFL MarMac, North Fayette Valley, Postville, South Winneshiek, Turkey Valley and West Central. In recent months, UIC officials approved membership for Cresco, New Hampton and Waukon.

The shrinking Northeast Iowa Conference, which dates back to 1920, will continue with five members for the 2024-2025 school year. Current member schools are in Decorah, Cresco, Waukon, New Hampton and Charles City.

Waverly Shell-Rock is leaving the conference after this current academic year and will be independent for the 2024-25 school year; and Charles City has also indicated interest in moving to another conference in the future.
