A vehicle versus cow accident was investigated on Dec. 16. Investigating officers reported a silver 2010 GMC Sierra pick-up was disabled within the travel portion of northbound lane of U.S. Highway 52. The deceased cow was in the west ditch south of 3124 U.S. Highway 52, with debris littered on the roadway. Jack Hrdlicka, age 58 of Decorah, was driving the vehicle northbound on U.S. 52 when the vehicle struck the black calf on the roadway. The investigating officer arrived at the home of Wayne and Pamela Wicks at 3124 U.S. Highway 52, and observed eight calves loose on the property. A gate was found open in the cattle yard. The owners were notified, and the officer remained on the scene until the cattle were rounded up. Damages totaled $14,000 to Hrdlicka’s truck and $1,000 for Wicks’ calf.
