Winneshiek County youth celebrate National 4H Week this week

Millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country are celebrating everything 4-H this week during National 4-H Week. Winneshiek County 4-H are observing National 4-H Week by showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people and will highlight the remarkable 4-H youth in our community who work each day to positively impact those around them.

The 2023 National 4-H Week theme is “I <3 4-H,” which celebrates everything loved about 4-H. The positive environment provided by 4-H volunteers ensures that kids in every county, from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities, are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career.

4-H believes that young people, in partnership with adults, can play a key role in creating a more promising and equitable future for youth, families and communities across the country. In 4-H, all members are given equal opportunity to succeed and are equipped with the skills they need to make a difference in the world.

“4-H is a wonderful way to find your spark! Exploring various 4-H project areas gives youth the opportunity to test out new skills.  When they find a topic that interests them, they can dive into that topic to continue learning more.  This is a great way to find new hobbies and explore career opportunities,” said Ashley Horgen, Winneshiek County Youth Coordinator.”

In Winneshiek County, more than 319 youth and 39 volunteers from the community are involved in 4-H. Winneshiek County 4-H members are involved in various project areas. The most popular project areas in Winneshiek County are Photography, Beef, Poultry, Swine, Visual Arts and Home Improvement.

For over 100 years, 4‑H has inspired families, shaped careers, and impacted communities.

A special salute to 4H was published in the October 5 Public Opinion.
