Agnes “Aggie” Rima, 92, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn. Mass of Christian Burial was at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Organist was Mary Beth Bouska. Cantor was Cindy Schissel. Hymns were “Here I am, Lord,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “How Great Thou Art. Eucharistic minister was Bonnie Arneson. Lectors were Jessie Solberg and Tonya Moe. Offertory gift bearers were Camryn and Karsyn Quandahl. Casket bearers were all of Aggie’s grandsons. Interment was at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.
Agnes “Aggie” Frances Rima was born July 7, 1925, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Lusson) Schemmel in Cresco. Aggie attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Cresco High School in 1943. She worked on the family farm and then worked at for the airlines in Washington, D.C. for a year during World War II. She also volunteered as a nurse’s aide for the Red Cross in Washington, D.C. Aggie returned to Cresco and worked at the Lumber Yard, at Cresco Union Savings Bank and Bell Telephone Co. In later years, she worked for St. Benedict Catholic School in the lunch program then the Freeport Store; after that, she worked at the Winneshiek County Home (now Wellington Place) for 18 years. She retired in 2002 and enjoyed quilting, fishing and mushroom hunting in retirement. She also enjoyed sitting around the fire pit with family and friends and enjoying a beer or two. Aggie volunteered at the Senior Citizen’s Center, Winneshiek Medical Center Auxiliary, and at Wellington Place. Aggie was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. Aggie was head of the funeral dinner committee at St. Benedict Catholic Church, where she served over 100 funeral dinners.
Aggie is survived by her six children: John (Deb) Rima, Decorah; Tom (Cindy) Rima, Decorah; Randy (LuAnn) Rima, Osage Beach, Mo.; Mike (Cynthia) Rima, Dacula, Ga.; Barb (friend, Arlo Warnke) Newhouse, Decorah; and Jan (Tony) Quandahl, Decorah; 13 grandchildren: Todd (Kelly) Rima, Jason (Molly) Rima, Brent (Marissa) Quandahl, Shane (Jess) Quandahl, Justin Quandahl, Michelle Rima, Stephanie Rima, Tonya (Jennifer Cira) Moe, Jessie (Morgan) Solberg, Shannon (Bruce Brooks) Moe, Tesha (Mike Dietrick) LeBahn, Maynard (Devon Crandall) Newhouse and Gracie Rima; nine great-grandchildren: Kelsey Rima, Graham and Griffin Rima, Kallie Engstrom, Camryn and Karsyn Quandahl, Coy and Ruby Quandahl, Lake LeBahn, Treyton Burnikel and Kennedi Lenard; one sister, Mary Ann Billmeyer, Cresco; along with several nieces and nephews.
Aggie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, Feb. 16, 2015; parents, Edward and Anna (Lusson) Schemmel; two brothers, Kenny Schemmel in infancy and Joe (Imogene) Schemmel; one sister, Dorothy (Dwain “Duke”) Dushack; father and mother-in-law, Ward and Florence Rima; two brothers-in-law, Don (Arlene) Rima and Louis “Bud” Billmeyer.
