Alyn Joseph Bucheit was born on Oct. 29, 1955 to Claude and Gretchen (Willson) Bucheit. In 1973, he graduated from Decorah High School. Alyn married LouAnn (Ewing) on Oct. 29, 1977, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Waukon. They would build their lives in Decorah. After high school, Alyn began his career at Carolan and Wicks Construction (later Wicks Construction), followed by Fred Carlson Co. During this time, Alyn and LouAnn purchased the Highlander Laundromat from his parents, Claude and Gretchen, and operated it until selling in 2000. From there, Alyn followed a passion for farming by working at Southern Accent Farms before returning to his construction career at Cedar Valley Corp.
In 2019, Alyn began his fight with colon cancer, forcing him to retire from construction. Over the course of his three -year battle, he continued his passion for farming through employment at Foresite Farms. Alyn enjoyed many activities, such as starting his day with a Hostess Ding Dong and a Pepsi, fishing, gardening, playing pull tabs, taking road trips to his favorite casinos, and socializing with his many friends. Alyn loved to visit with everybody, including the many nurses and doctors throughout his battle. He was an avid sports fan, especially collegiate wrestling, as well as all Cyclone athletics and the Minnesota Twins. Alyn’s love of music was evident in his following of the bands, Hairball and Foreigner. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. Alyn also loved spending time with his family and sharing his hobbies, especially with his grandchildren.
Alyn is survived by his wife, LouAnn; and his three children: Tara (Damian) McGrane of Peosta, Bryan (Alexa) Bucheit of Gilbert; and Kayla Bucheit, Calmar; nine grandchildren: Christine, Cassius, Catalina, Caelius, Celia, Caritas, Cosmas McGrane, Jocelyn, and baby boy Bucheit, due in October; sisters and brother: Claudette (Marty Hess) Bucheit of Decorah, Jenny (Gary) Klotzbach of Decorah, and Jody (Deb Schulte) of Spring Grove, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lawrence Ewing of Elma, Deb (Dave) Dugan of Waterloo, Daniel (Bobbie) Ewing of Cresco, Patty (Al Peterson) Dahlstrom of Lansing, Judy (Don) Miller of Postville, and Donna (Darby) Stone of Lansing; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
