Betty Jean Converse, 91, of Postville, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022 at Northgate Care Center, Waukon. She was born May 23, 1931 to Leo and Zella (Wilcox) Fleege in Dubuque. Betty was baptized, received first communion and was confirmed at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque. She attended Holy Ghost grade school and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in May of 1949. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Western Auto Warehouse and A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing Company both in Dubuque.
Betty Jean was united in marriage with Robert Converse on March 31, 1951 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque. Three children were born to this union, Cheryl, Craig and Susan. Bob was traveling with IH when they moved to Cedar Falls in 1954, back to Dubuque in 1955 and then to Postville in 1956. Betty started helping her husband with bookkeeping at the Postville Implement in 1967.
Betty was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, St. Bridget Rosary Society, Immaculate Conception Alumni Association and the Tri-City Golf Club Auxiliary. She loved to knit and watch Iowa Basketball and the more exciting the game got, the faster the knitting needles would click.
Betty is survived by her three children, Cheryl (Drew) Pellett of Decorah, Craig (Cynthia) Converse of Postville, and Susan (Brian) Will of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Daniel (Deborah) Pellett of Washington, D.C., Paul (Angie) Pellett of Decorah, Andrew (Nikki) Pellett of Denver, Colo., David (Katie) Pellett of Kansas City, Kans., Sara (Joe) Ellerbroek of Charlotte, N.C., Scott (Amy) Will of Alexandria, Va., and Christina (Mitchell) Schultz of Frankville; and nine great-grandchildren and her sister, Thelma Schlueter of Dubuque.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Robert Converse in 2016; her parents and her brothers, Donald (Edith) Fleege and Bernard Fleege.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, with Rev. Martin Coolidge as the celebrant. There will be a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of mass at the church on Friday.
Inurnment will follow at Postville Cemetery in Postville.
Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, is helping the family with the services.
