Charmaine Kern, 84 of Decorah, died Thursday evening, Feb. 9, 2017, at Wellington Place in Decorah. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Burial was in Locust Cemetery in rural Decorah. Visitation began at 10 a.m.Wednesday, one hour before the service, at First Lutheran Church. Louise Charmaine Kern was born Feb. 17, 1932, at home near Locust, Winneshiek County, the only child of Albert G. and Margie (Banning) Kern. She attended country school and then graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1954, at age 22. Charmaine worked in the kitchen at the hospital in Decorah for 29 years as a cook’s assistant. She retired in 1994. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was active in Mary Circle, and also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Charmaine enjoyed the Family Table Restaurant, the Meal Site, her neighbors and friends, and her cats – Cookies and Candy. She enjoyed her multiple daily walks around the neighborhood. She became a resident of Wellington Place in Decorah July 17, 2015.
Charmaine was preceded in death by her father, Albert, March 28, 1974; and her mother, Margie, May 19, 1997.
