Cleo Joseph Heying passed away April 16, 2020, surrounded by his wife and children, after a short battle with cancer. A memorial service and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date. Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville is assisting the family.
He was born in Ossian to Peter Joseph and Agnes (Bohr) Heying Nov. 11, 1938, one of 11 children. After graduating eighth grade he stayed home to help on the family farm.
Cleo married Emily Ida Schmitt Sept. 15, 1959. Together they have raised seven children and have 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. They farmed and milked dairy cattle for over 40 years on a farm just East of Postville. Cleo also took on many other second and third jobs to help support his family over the years. After the barn burned in 1998, he raised crops, helped other farmers and drove a school bus. He was very proud and hardworking. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, dancing and playing golf and spending time with his family and friends. He was beloved by his family and all who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor and playfulness.
He is survived by his wife, Emily (Schmitt) Heying; his seven children, 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Galen, Fort Mill, S.C.; Wes (Julie) Monona; Brandi (Dale) Crozier and McCoy, McGregor; Brooke (TJ) Pierce, Lydia and Jax, Guttenberg; Mitchel Livingston (Ashley Munz) Pleasant Hill, Macey (Cole) Kregel and Weston, Monona; Cheryl Howard, Panora, Joey (Katie) Howard and Hudson, Bondurant; Tommy Howard (Kaitlin Bundt) Ankeny; Deanne (Robert) Welper, Jefferson, Wis., Cory, Chicago, Ill., Matt and Ashley, Madison, Wis.; Scott (Kristy Koehn) Monona, Tyler, Prairie du Chien, Wis., Jordan (Tyler) Brainard, Madden and Mason, National; Craig (Dana), Monona, Seth, San Antonio, Texas and Eden, Monona; Julie (Joe) Price, Johnathan and Jillian, Ankeny. He also is survived by his two sisters, Joyce (Dick) Schindelar, Calmar; Marcie (Larry) Havel; two brothers, Richard(Linda), Ossian; Donald (Carolyn) Calmar; sisters-in-law, Marion (Irvin) Heying, Sumner; Elaine (Larry) Heying, Ossian.
Cleo was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Agnes Heying; three brothers: Hugo and his wife Lucille, Larry and Irvin, and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Raymond Langreck; Kay and Stanley Humpal; Elsie and Donald Timp; Rosalyn and Gene Bodensteiner.
