Corrine Thingvold, 96, of Decorah, died Saturday morning, Feb. 29, 2020, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, March 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust, with Todd Burrichter presiding. Burial was in Locust Cemetery. Visitation began Friday at 10 a.m., one hour before the service, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Corrine (Oyen) Thingvold was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Gunder and Nellie (Giving) Oyen. She was baptized and confirmed at Pontoppidan Norwegian Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and educated in the country schools in Glenwood Township.

Corrine was united in marriage to Paul H. Thingvold Feb. 22, 1942, at Pontoppidan Norwegian Lutheran Church in Glenwood Township. This union was blessed with two daughters, Brenda Kay, born Nov. 8, 1944 and Linda Faye, born Dec. 4, 1948.

Corrine and Paul made their home on a farm off the county road between Locust and Hesper. They joined the St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust at the persuading of Pastor Carl Losen, whose family were relatives and neighbors of the Thingvolds. She was a long-time member of the church and very active in Circle and Ladies Aid. They enjoyed seeing new places. The couple, along with their dear friends Clarence and Vera Hovey, traveled to almost every state in the Union as well as Canada and Mexico. It was coming home from one of these trips in 1978 that they heard the terrible news of their daughter Brenda’s death in a farm accident.

Corrine was active in the Rebekkah’s, a long-time member of 4-H and served as a leader for many years. She was later named an honorary lifetime member of 4-H. She liked to play cards and Bingo and loved to bake. Her grandchildren liked her chocolate chip cookies, but she didn’t really care for them.

Corrine became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in December 2016. She enjoyed staying active participating in their various activities but spoke often of her early morning coffee and folding towels at the home.

Corrine is survived by one daughter, Linda Schwade of Stewartville, Minn.; four grandchildren: Jon and Libby Hurley of Savage, Minn. and their children Sean and Conor, Jason and Mindy Hurley of Edina, Minn. and their children Megan and Braden, Robin and George Osterhus of Owatonna, Minn. and their children Nick, Preston and Shay and Rhonda Johnson of Appleton, Wis., and her children Skylar, and her son Emmett, Alexis and Tavja; one brother-in-law, Merlin Ford of La Crosse, Wis.; one son-in-law, Bernie and Sandy Hurley of Harmony, Minn.; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, June 9, 1999; her daughter, Brenda Hurley, Sept. 4, 1978; three brothers: Burton, Emmett and Sherman Oyen; and two sisters, Ideline Oyen and Jeanette Borsheim.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff of the Aase Haugen Home for their excellent care and compassion for Corrine.
