Daniel Mease, 63, of Decorah, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at his home in Decorah after a long battle with cancer. Visitation was 3 until 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. Memorials may be given to Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa 200 Hawkins Drive Iowa City. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Daniel Kevin Mease was born June 28, 1954, to Jack and Margaret (Steddom) Mease in Winterset. He graduated a semester early from Winterset Senior High School in 1972. After High School, Dan left for Colorado. While there, he learned how to lay brick. He moved back to Winterset and started Mease Construction. Dan married Kristi Olson and together they had their daughter, Kelsey. They later divorced. Dan moved to Decorah in 1996. He built and remodeled many homes around the Decorah area. In the spring of 2014, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and made the decision to undergo experimental treatments with the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa.
Dan loved to work and was always doing something. He enjoyed spending time in the woods, cutting wood, gardening, reading, traveling, cooking and baking. He was a very social person and would strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Kelsey (fiancé, Alex Hagg) Mease, Decorah; special friend, Janice Myers, Fort Atkinson; brother, Jerry (Vicki) Mease, Winterset; nieces and nephews: Kevin (Wendy) Mease, Cedar Rapids; Jennifer (Doug) Mease, Winterset; Jeff (Chasity) Mease, Des Moines; and Jason (friend, Mary Jo Harms) Mease, Huxley; along with great-nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Margaret (Steddom) Mease and brother, David Mease.
