DJ Scholtes, 33, of Waukon, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021, at his home with loved ones and prayers surrounding him.
A public visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 15, from 4 o 7 p.m. at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. An in-school visitation will also be held on Monday, Nov. 15, for the Allamakee High School staff and students. Celebration of Life services will be held on Dec. 18, 2021, at Iron Ridge Church in Waukon. Donations in memory of DJ will be given to Iron Ridge Church. Cards and flowers may be sent to Martin-Grau Funeral Home. Friends and family are asked to write memories of DJ for his unborn child to have about their dad and bring them to the Celebration of Life (or mail to 903 Dundee Drive, Waukon IA, 52172).
Delbert James Scholtes was born Feb. 24, 1988, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, the son of Thomas and Donna (Russell) Scholtes. DJ grew up in Churchtown and graduated from Kee High School in Lansing, in 2006. He then went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in History from Iowa State University in Ames, and a Bachelor of Arts in Education (K-12) from Luther College in Decorah, with a Special Endorsement in Psychology. Through baptism in September of 2011, DJ became a born again Christian and the Worship Pastor and Leader at Iron Ridge Church in Waukon.
On June 28, 2012, DJ married Jomarie “Jo” Lensing and they settled in rural Waukon in 2014. DJ was the At-Risk Youth Interventionist for Allamakee High School and enjoyed his years working with students, staff, and families in the community.
He is survived by his wife Jomarie Scholtes and soon-to-be-born child of Waukon; his parents, Tom and Donna Scholtes of Churchtown; two sisters: Samantha Scholtes of Mason City, and Genevieve (Mark) Richards of Las Cruces, NM; father-in-law, Russell (Audrey) Lensing of Calmar, mother-in-law Teddie Lensing of North Liberty; sister-in-law Katilyn (Tyrrell) Hughes of Thornton; brother-in-law Dominik (Chelsea) Lensing and niece Hallie Lensing of Center Point; step-siblings: Justin Snow of Des Moines, and Paige (Jacob Bruess) Snow of Protivin; his grandfather, Rod Olson of Lansing; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
DJ was preceded in death by his grandparents: Delbert and Ruth Russell, James Scholtes, and Kathleen Olson and his aunts Genevieve Scholtes, June Scholtes, and Jamie Bjornsen.
Honorary urnbearers are DJ’s “brothers”: Bryan and Trevor Mincks, Dominik Lensing, Mark Richards, Ben Scholtes, Corey Moore, and Josh Strong.
