Doris Balik, 78, of Protivin, died Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 4, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, with Rev. Nick March officiating. Lector was Doris’ granddaughter, Brenda Mueterthies. Offertory gift bearers were Doris’ granddaughters and Missy Riehle, Stephanie Wedo, Katelyn Wedo and Brenda Mueterthies. Organist was Sue Panos. Soloist was Kimberly Ball. Hymns were “Be Not Afraid,” “Amazing Grace,” “Taste and See,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “How Great Thou Art.” Eucharistic ministers were Doris’ nieces and nephew: Sally Yungtum, Nancy Cuvelier and Clair Dietzenbach. Mass servers were Garrett Dietzenbach and Brody Hackman. Casket bearers were Doris’ grandsons: Ben Meyer, Brad Riha, Randy Wedo, Nick Wedo, Mitch Balik, Dave Balik and Kyle Balik. Interment was at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Protivin. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Doris Clara (Gebel) Balik was born Jan. 4, 1937, on a farm near North Washington, to Frank and Helen (Schwickerath) Gebel. She graduated from Lawler High school in 1955. Doris married Raymond Balik Oct. 15, 1957, at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, and to this union six children were born. Together they farmed the family farm for 40 years, until they retired and moved into Protivin in 1996. Doris was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, baking, canning, attending grandchildren’s events, playing cards, working on the farm with Ray and her family and going on fishing trips and vacationing with Raymond.
Doris is survived by her six children: Gary (Denise) Balik, Little Turkey; Dale Balik, Protivin; Judy Riha, Protivin; Lori (Gary) Schutte, Castalia; Jane (Pat) Wedo, Castalia and Alan (Sue) Balik, Ft. Atkinson; 11 grandchildren: Brenda Mueterthies, Brad Riha, Ben Meyer, Missy Riehle, Randy Wedo, Stephanie Wedo, Nick Wedo, Katelyn Wedo, Mitch Balik, David Balik and Kyle Balik; three step-grandchildren: Bryan, Aaron and Alayna Schutte; eight great-grandchildren: Morgan Meyer, Blake Riehle, Carter Riehle, Jadeyn Mueterthies, Alexa Mueterthies, Raela Mueterthies, Kendyl Wedo, Reid Wedo; two step-great-grandchildren, Lela Schutte and Isaac Schutte; sisters: Lucille (Francis) Reicks, Lawler, Leona Kriener, Cresco and Jean Hageman, Decorah; brothers, Francis (Darlene) Gebel, New Hampton and Joe (Diana) Gebel, Lawler; sisters-in-law, Mary Agnes Gebel, New Hampton and Rita Gebel, Sumner; brother-in-law, James Leibold, Lawler; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; parents, Frank and Helen (Schwickerath) Gebel; two brothers, LeRoy and Robert Gebel; two sisters, Marilyn Leibold, Loretta (Paul) Kleve; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Richard (Arlene) (Gladys) Balik, Leonard (Dorothy) Bouska, Edward (Evelyn) Ryan, John (Helen) Kout, Marie Balik, Francis Burns and Luke Kriener; father- and mother-in-law, John and Rose (Schwade) Balik.
