Dr. Nanette J. Eklund, age 92, passed away March 1, 2024 at The Wealshire of Bloomington, Minn., where she resided. She was born on Nov. 13, 1931 in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Blanche and James Timmer, and was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Nanette’s focus was always education. Although she did not learn to read until the sixth grade, she was a lifelong learner and teacher. She earned her B.A. at Dana College, Master’s at Kansas State University and Doctorate at the University of Iowa, becoming the head of the Department of Education at Luther College
She was a world traveler, visiting many countries with her dear friend, John Mulligan. Nanette loved to talk to people from other countries, whether abroad or at home. She was also a proud lifelong Democrat and ardent Joe Biden supporter. A truly remarkable woman with a love of classical music, she was a much loved mother, grandmother and dear friend.
She is survived by Timmerly (Gary Smith) Eklund of Washburn, Ill., Sally (Steven) Sawin of Middletown, Va., and Frida (John) Maiers of Bloomington, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by son Andrew Eklund, daughter Catherine Burchell, special friend John Mulligan, husband Rev. Milton Eklund, husband Zong Sui Yang, brother George Timmer, sister Catherine Offenhauer as well as her parents.
