Elaine Joyce Doubek, age 85, of Ridgeway, passed into eternal life on Jan. 21, 2024 at her home in the arms of her husband.

She was born on July 17, 1938 to Leroy and Anna Mary (Munz)Phipps at home on Clay Hill Road in Decorah, Iowa. The family then moved to a farm northeast of Ridgeway. There she rode her pony to country school where her sister was her teacher. She finished her education by graduating from Ridgeway High School.

After high school, Elaine waitressed at a café in Cresco, until she married Donald Neubauer. To that union, a son, Todd was born. She raised Todd while working full time on their farm east of Cresco. They later divorced. Elaine pursued front end alignment school in St. Louis, MO where she was the only female to ever complete the course. She then gained employment at Highway Tire doing front end alignment work. At this job she met her future husband, Roger Doubek, while repairing his vehicle. They were wed on November 1, 1980. After Highway Tire closed she managed Kum & Go gas station in Cresco for 10 years.

They then purchased the “Back 40” between Cresco and Ridgeway. She took great pride in raising her four legged babies: sheep, hogs and silver fox. She showed hogs at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., and won first and third placings the first time stepping into the show ring. She was a wonder woman, doing all this while tending a vegetable and flower garden.

She semi-retired due to the onset of Alzheimer’s, but she still enjoyed spending time with others. She began enjoying going to her class reunions, family reunions and weekly coffee group in Ridgeway. The last couple of years she enjoyed spending most of her day with her blue heeler Lucy and watching the hummingbirds visit the flowers and bushes outside.

Elaine is survived by her husband Roger, four stepdaughters: Julie (Barry Huebner) Doubek of Auburndale, Wis., Sue (Dean) Miller of Cresco, Kathy (Chuck) Malek of Cresco and Chris (Barry) Dvorak of Cedar Falls; daughter in-law, Gordie Neubauer of Cresco; sister-in-law Dorothy Phipps of Lakeville, Minn.; 17 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Merle Phipps, sister and brother-in-law Adah (Leonard) Steinmetz, son Todd Neubauer, two grandsons Hayden and Michael Huebner and one great grandson Conner Ostricki.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday afternoon. Burial will take place at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
