Ella Anderson, 96, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at Wellington Place in Decorah. Funeral services were at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, 1381 Big Canoe Road, Decorah, with Rev. Kurt Bockoven presiding. Burial was in the Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was after 10 a.m., Friday at the church. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Ella Marie (Barth) Anderson was born March 5, 1922, the daughter of John and Anna (Halverson) Barth in Hesper. Ella was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Luana. Ella attended Franklin No. 4 Country School near Luana and was a 4-H member for eight years. She married Oren Anderson March 24, 1946, at the Glenwood parsonage. Together they farmed various farms until they bought their own in Hesper Township. Ella was a member of the Big Canoe Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Tabitha Circle. She also was a member of the Wayside Garden Club, the VFW and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Ella enjoyed doing Norwegian needle work, gardening, traveling, dancing, scrap booking and spending quality time with family and friends.
Ella’s survivors include her nephews and nieces: Greg (Gina) McKernan, Denver, Colo.; Jim (Pam) McKernan, Cedar Falls; Randy McKernan, Cedar Rapids; Stan (Jane) McKernan, Decorah; Ron (Cyndi) Whitehall, Wis.; Mark McKernan, Denver, Colo.; Mary Flatin, Waukon; Kay Flatin, N.J.; Daniel Flatin, N.J.; along with many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Ella was preceded in death by her husband, Oren Anderson, in 1975; her parents, John and Anna Barth; one sister, Ruth (Dick) McKernan; one sister-in-law, Lois Flatin; one brother-in-law, Leslie Anderson; one nephew, Donald Flatin; and a special friend, Rudy Gerleman.
