Eugene J. Novak, 92, died Dec. 17, 2018, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. Mass of Christian burial is at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, with Father Aaron Junge officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Protivin.
Eugene J. Novak was born May 17, 1926, son of Lewis J. and Annie (Frana) Novak in Winneshiek County near Protivin. He attended school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1944. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Army in Germany.
He was united in marriage to Gertrude Bohr in Ossian May 24, 1954. To this union six children were born. They farmed northeast of Protivin until retirement in 1987. Upon retiring he made furniture using lumber from his own wood lot.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish, Knights of Columbus, an American Legion commander, and was very active as a Hospice volunteer.
He is survived by six children: Ronald (Mary) Novak of Protivin, Perry (Wendy) Novak of Decorah, June (Allen) Moudry of Protivin, David (Irene) St. Charles, Minn., Cynthia (Joseph) Streif of Broken Arrow, Okla. and Audrey Novak of Protivin. There are 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, Sept. 1, 1997; his parents; and a brother, Andrew Novak.
