Evelyn Irene Roy, 96, formerly of the Hesper, area, died Dec. 15, 2016, at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook.Visitation is Monday, Dec. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Mabel, Minn. Funeral services are Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m., also at St. Olaf in Mabel. The Mengis Funeral home in Mabel, Minn. is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorials may be directed to the Philip and Evelyn Roy Memorial Scholarship at Marshalltown Community College or to the Friendship Wagon Train.

Evelyn was born in Marshall County Feb. 1, 1920, to Claude and Clara Morris Lowry. She graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1938, where she was a star basketball player. She married Philip Roy Oct. 21, 1941. Evelyn and Phil farmed in Tama and Marshall Counties for 31 years before moving to northeast Iowa, where they continued to farm until they retired. Evelyn and Phil spent many years driving their Belgian horses and participating in the Friendship Wagon Train, which rode to collect funds for Camp Winnebago, which supports children and adults with special needs. Evelyn and Phil were parents to Jeanette (Lloyd Yocum), Connie (Jim Adair), Claudia (Tim Powers), Sandy (Larry Messer), Judy (Bill Roads), and Steve (Elaine Johnson); 25 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by in-laws Jeannette and Bill Hinz, Leona Roy, and Vula Gager.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; her daughter Jeanette, grandsons Jimmie and Jacin, and granddaughter Mary; her brothers Myron, Morris, and James; and her sisters Ruby and Donna.Evelyn was a woman of many talents, who was equally at ease driving a tractor or a team of draft horses. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her for her warmth and wonderful sense of humor.
