Florence Zahasky, 102, of Cresco, and formerly of Protivin, died Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the Evans Home in Cresco. A Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Protivin, with burial following in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Florence was born Oct. 3, 1912, to Frank and Johanna (Valenta) Hauber on the family farm between Spillville and Ridgeway. She was the oldest of five daughters. As a child she stayed with her grandmother in Calmar during the week so she could attend Catholic grade school, and she later graduated from Calmar High School in 1931. She married Roy Zahasky Aug. 22, 1933, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville; it was a double wedding with her sister Madeline, who married Joe Ryan. Florence and Roy lived on the edge of Protivin and farmed until his death in 1976. She continued to live on the farm until 2010, when she moved to the Evans Home in Cresco. On their farm they raised pigs, cows, chickens and the ducks that they ate for holidays. Florence and Roy loved to fish in the area as well in Minnesota. They liked to go on trips and often went to see Roy’s sister in Chicago. Florence was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Parish.
Florence is survived by two sisters, Eileen Sbiral of Ft. Atkinson and Madeline Ryan of Cresco; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; and two sisters, Helen Anderson and Bea Novak.
