Gary Hayek

Gary Hayek, 64, of Ottumwa, Formerly of Ft. Atkinson, died Friday,  Nov. 27, 2015, at his home. A memorial Mass is at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec., 3, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with  Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Lector is Sister Diana Blong. Offertory gift bearers are Allen Hayek, Ronald Hayek and Arlene Lynch. Organist is Doris Thompson. Music is by the St. Wenceslaus Choir and Dan Silhacek, soloist. Hymns are “Here I am Lord,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “On Eagles Wings,” “Goin’ Home” and “How Great Thou Art.” Eucharistic ministers are Sister Diana Blong, Helen Pinter and Phyllis Riehle. Honorary casket bearers are Gary’s nieces and nephews: Jennifer (Hayek) Lennahan, Alexandra (Hayek) Albertson, Philip Hayek, Jackson Hayek, Jonathan Hayek and Dominic Hayek. Interment is at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Jacksonville, Ill. Arrangements are being handled by Balik Funeral Home, Spillville.

Gary Raymond Hayek was born June 11, 1951, to Raymond and Sylvia (Frana) Hayek at the Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah. Gary attended St. Wenceslaus School and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1969. He then went to Rochester Community College in Rochester, Minn. for one year then graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in history. Gary then taught and coached at Grinnell High School in Grinnell for five years. He then took a job with Dr. Scholl’s in Houston, Texas for a few years. He then became a crop insurance adjuster for Farm Bureau Insurance, a job he has held to date. Gary was a extreme history buff; he also liked to collect coins and stamps and many other things. Gary was active in high school sports — even holding scoring records for a number of years. He also played on the Fort Atkinson baseball team and followed the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Gary was active in the Catholic Church, and was a fourth degree Knight’s of Columbus.

Gary is survived by his mother, Sylvia Hayek, Ft, Atkinson; two brothers, Allen (Mary) Hayek, Ronald (Julie) Hayek; sister, Arlene (Charles) Lynch, all of Ft. Atkinson; his nieces and nephews: Philip Hayek, Jackson Hayek, Jonathan Hayek, Jennifer (Hayek) Lennahan, Alexandra (Hayek) Albertson and Dominic Hayek.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Hayek, April 24, 1981; and his fiancé, Roberta Acree.
