Gregory Arnold Wenthold, age 99, passed away Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021 at Winneshiek County Medical Center.
Greg was born on Jan. 31, 1922 in Festina, Iowa, and was one of twelve children born to the late Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold.Greg was a quiet and gentle man. He was strong in his faith, serving as usher for the church for many years. He was generous to his church and community. He was loved by those he met.Greg was a skilled mechanic. He was very dedicated to his job at Reilly Construction, working there for 65 years keeping the equipment operating.
He spent many of his early years with them working “on the road”. In fact, Greg invented a rock crusher that crushes the concrete from the road allowing it to be reused.Greg lived most of his adult life with his sister, Evelyn Wiltgen and her family, becoming a very special uncle, great uncle and great-great uncle to her family. He was a great babysitter for his nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He loved children and they loved them.
He is survived by siblings: Raymond (Marsha) Wenthold, Norine (Robert) Drahozal, Ronald (Marlene) Wenthold, sister-in-law JoAnn Wenthold, and special family Karl (Annette) Wiltgen, Rosalyn (James) DuRocher, Ellen Sue Wiltgen and Jan (Patty) Wiltgen.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Evelyn (Ralph) Wiltgen, Edwin (Leona) Wenthold, Rita (Francis) Wiltgen, Thecla (Oscar) Ott, Agatha (Leo) Burke, Francis Wenthold, Linus Wenthold, Margaret (Gervase) Hanken, and, niece Mae Jean Bohr, nephew Lee Wiltgen and niece-in-law Elaine Wiltgen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2021 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 420 E. Main Street, Ossian, IA 52161 with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 8:30 a.m. until time of service with a Rosary being prayed at 8 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery, Ossian. The service will be live-streamed at Facebook.com/cofsparishes. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church General Fund or Ossian Senior Hospice. Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, is helping the family with the arrangements.
