She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church near Decorah. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1949. On Feb. 12, 1950, she was united in marriage to Howard Lester Gullickson at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with four children: Darryl, Dennis, Duane and Connie.Howard and Hazel farmed near Burr Oak.
Hazel helped with all kinds of farm work and kept the farm neat and tidy. Due to Howard’s love for the Cubs and Hawkeyes, Hazel became a fan as well. Hazel was the principal’s secretary for many years at North Winneshiek Community School in rural Decorah. Her faith was also important to her, and Burr Oak Lutheran Church remained near and dear to her heart. She was active through WELCA, circle, church cleaning, “do-day,” serving at funerals and the annual bazaar and meatball supper. She enjoyed playing Euchre, going to card club, sewing and quilting. Above all else, her family was most precious to her.
