Helen Borseth, 100, of Decorah, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at her home. Services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Organist was Brad Schultz. Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casket bearers were J.D. Nesset, Calvin Nesset, Don Rude, Jessie Kipp, Joe Helgeson and Michael Shindelar. Interment was at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.
Helen Rebecca (Rude) Borseth was born March 19, 1916, the daughter of Julius and Olga (Rosendahl) Rude, on a farm in Glenwood township. She attended country school in Glenwood and Springfield townships and then Decorah High School. Helen married Otto Nesset Aug. 22, 1934, at the Glenwood parsonage, and to this union two children were born: Harlan and Janice. They farmed together in Glenwood Township, before moving to Decorah. She worked at the Springer Hotel, Darling Drug Store, Anthony’s and the Winneshiek Memorial Hospital. Otto died in 1976, and she married Roy Halverson Oct. 1, 1977, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She also babysat and cooked at the Sun Flower daycare in Decorah. Roy passed away in 1985. Helen later married Melvin Borseth Dec. 29, 1990, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She helped Val Borseth with her catering business and volunteered at the food pantry. Melvin passed away 1999. Helen was an excellent cook and enjoyed shopping and traveling. She enjoyed going to Arizona in the winters. She volunteered at the Church and taught Sunday school for 23 years.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Janice Helgeson, Spillville; daughter-in-law, Norma Nesset, Bettendorf; six grandchildren: Calvin (Bonnie) Nesset, Davenport; Hope (Roger) Kneeble, Waterloo; Joe (Roxanne) Helgeson, Ossian; Sharyl (David) Haugen, Ossian; Jeff Helgeson, Freeport; John Helgeson, Cresco; six great-grandchildren: Jessica Kipp, Michael Shindelar, Amber Helgeson, Dalton Helgeson, JD Nesset and Wade Nesset; along with several great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Martha Rude, Mabel, Minn., along with the Borseth and Halverson families.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Harlan Nesset in 2002; grandson, Jim Helgeson; husbands: Otto Nesset in 1976, Roy Halverson in 1985 and Melvin Borseth in 1999; three sisters: Cora (Norman Sr.) Moen, Arlene (Clarence) Moen and Norma (Kermit) Mestad; three brothers: Curtis Rude, Roger (Gladys) Rude and Howard (Irene) Rude; sisters-in-law: Clara (Lloyd) Jaastad, Minnie (Jack) Telford, and Elsie (Milford) Quam; along with other relatives.
