Helen Elizabeth Hageman, 85, of Fort Atkinson, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, surrounded by loved ones. Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar, with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Mass servers are Logan Hageman, Addyson Einwalter and Emmett Schwartzhoff. Lectors are Toril Einwalter, Courtney Hageman and Monica Schwartzhoff. Organist is Lane Rich. Soloist is Cindy Schissel. The St. Aloysius Choir will also sing. Prelude Music: “Shall We Gather at the River” and “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational hymns are “Be Not Afraid,” “Amazing Grace,” “You have come down to the Lakeshore,” “The Summons” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” Offertory gift bearers are Helen’s granddaughters. Eucharistic ministers are Kay Heying, Carol Heying and Lorna Bouska. Casket bearers are Helen’s grandsons. Interment is at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar. Arrangements are being handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar.

Helen Elizabeth (Heying) Hageman was born May 5, 1933, the fourth child of 14 to Joe and Rose (Bohr) Heying in Festina. She attended St. Mary’s School in Festina through eighth grade. Helen married Melvin Hageman Sept. 29, 1953, in Festina. Together they farmed and raised their family near Fort Atkinson. Helen worked at Wapsi Produce in Decorah for 20 years and at Calmar Foods for 10. Helen enjoyed playing cards and watching baseball (Dodgers).She most enjoyed spending time with her family, supporting their activities, and bringing them together, as she was an amazing mother and grandmother. Helen looked forward to Sundays that were spent making dinner for her children and grandchildren, teaching them card games and handing out ice cream cones. Helen would then enjoy the remaining afternoon with her brothers and sisters.

Helen is survived by seven children: Daniel (Laurie) Hageman, Waucoma; Sheryl (Perry) Sievert, Calmar; Timothy (Lori) Hageman, Ossian; Patrick (Gretchen) Hageman, Marshalltown; Joseph (Cheryl) Hageman, Calmar; Sue (Darin) Einwalter, Fort Atkinson; and Sally (Mark) Schwartzhoff, Fort Atkinson; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Hageman, Calmar; 23 grandchildren: Cassandra (Corey) Tieskoetter, Ali (Matt) Halverson, Tanner Hageman; Hailey Hageman, step-grandson, Jayme Kimber; Bryan (Jamie) Sievert, Kyle (Jessy) Sievert, Tyler (Jocelyn) Sievert; Courtney (Steven) Huinker, Nolan and Colton Hageman; Reese, Bennett and Luke Hageman; Ryan, Abby and Logan Hageman; Toril, Josie, William and Addyson Einwalter and Monica, Rodney and Emmett Schwartzhoff; 11 great-grandchildren: Gracie, Tate, Nash, Hal, Ryker, Caleb, Carter, Chloe, Nolan, Aaleyah and Nicholas; sisters and brothers: Ernie and Kay Heying, Calmar; John and Louise Heying, Calmar; Doris Bouska, Hawkeye; Carl and Carol Heying, Dubuque; Lorna and Cletus Bouska, Waucoma; Robert and Tina Zoppel Heying, Napa, Calif.; Mary Ann Trewin, Waucoma; and Sue Heying, Calmar; sisters-in-law, Pat Heying, Ossian; Marion Heying, West Union; and many nephews, nieces and friends, including one special Norwegian foreign exchange student, Toril Stanton, England.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, June 11, 2014; her son, Rodney Hageman, Oct. 6, 1997; parents, Joe and Rose (Bohr) Heying; brothers and sisters: Greg and Helen Heying, Paul Heying, Dennis Heying and Betty and Jim Bruess; father and mother-in-law, Felix and Monica (Holthaus) Hageman; brothers and sisters-in-law: Dick Trewin, Jim Bouska, Julius and Irene Hageman, Carl and Margaret Hageman, Richard and Clara Mae Hageman, Gust Hageman and Irene and Edmund Schmitz; nephews: Jim Bruess, Charles Hageman and Jerry Schmitz; and niece, Kristie Foreman; grand-nephew, Jeffery Schmitz.
