Helen Herold, 81, of Calmar, died Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 5, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar,  with Rev. Robert Gross and Deacon Andrew Marr officiating. Lector is Betty Hackman. Pianist is Annette Remmen Walter. The St. Aloysius Choir will sing. Hymns are “On Eagles Wings,” “Only A Shadow,” “Blessed Are They” and “How Great Thou Art.” Offertory gift bearers are Brandon, Teressa and Emma Kadlec. Interment is at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar. Arrangements are being handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar.

Helen Elizabeth (Hunter) Herold was born Aug. 21, 1934, the daughter of Lyle and Eva (Hawkins) Hunter, in Ossian. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Ossian. Helen married Robert Herold March 2, 1954, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Together they farmed west of Spillville and also owned Herold Grocery in Spillville. She later worked at DECO in Decorah before working for John Deere in Waterloo. Helen and Robert moved to Missouri where she worked for Bass Tracker Boat Co. After Roberts’s death, she moved back to Calmar in 2000. Helen was a member of the St. Aloysius Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary and helped at the food pantry in Calmar. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, going with her brother to see her sister in Des Moines and spending time with her family.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Robin (David) Zweibahmer, Calmar; two sons, Steve (Cathy) Herold, Holmen, Wis. and Ron (Heidi) Herold, Calmar; granddaughter, Teressa (Brandon) Kadlec, Decorah; great-granddaughter, Emma Kadlec; sister, Patricia Gerlich, Des Moines; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Leonard (Mjel) Herold, Brookfield, Vt., Martha Martin, San Jose, Calif., Don (Ann) Herold, Cresco and Ruth Herold, Omaha, Neb.; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, Dec. 9, 1999; parents, Lyle and Eva (Hawkins) Hunter; brother, John Hunter, Jan. 26, 2016; brother-in-law, Walter (Dorothy) Herold; sisters-in-law, Sister Elaine Herold; Dorothy (Ed) Einwalter.
