Henry James Monroe Jr., 88, of Castalia, died Monday, May 16, 2016 at Gundersen Health Systems, La Crosse, Wis.

Henry James “Jr” was born Nov. 19, 1927 at the Monroe farm in Castalia, Iowa to Henry Sr. and Nettie (Peschel) Monroe. He attended the rural Castalia School and helped his parents on the family farm. Jr joined the Army in 1947, serving as an AMVET. He was honorably discharged to come home to work on the family farm.

Jr was united in marriage with Lorraine Lauer on April 18, 1950 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa. Jr along with Lorraine farmed the family farm.  Jr also worked at the local sale barn, where he was a livestock dealer. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and National Rifle Association. Jr enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with Lorraine and many friends.  He enjoyed feeding the birds, woodworking, going to auction sales and helping Lorraine with the consignment store. In his later years, Jr and Lorraine enjoyed dancing and attending events with friends and family.

Jr is survived by his sisters-in-law, Marge Monroe and Jo Ann (Forrest) Monroe; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends, John and Gail Frederick and Doug and Pam Buddenberg and their families.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine; his parents, Henry Sr. and Nettie Monroe; brother, Jim; and brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Virginia and their six children.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 19, from 3-7 p.m. at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa with Rev. Alan Wicks.
