Janice Davick

A memorial service for Janice M. Davick, 82, of Rochester, Minn., formerly of Decorah, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 at Bethel Lutheran Church 810 3rd Ave. SE, Rochester, Minn., with the Rev. Jason Burggraff officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m on Monday, Dec. 20, 2021 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester, Minn., and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Janice Marjean Davick was born on Aug. 21, 1939 in Minot, ND to parents, Leslie and Agnes (Kjellberg) Berntson. She died on Oct. 28, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Janice graduated from Richfield High School. She was active in the arts and in her community and had dreams of becoming a teacher. Following graduation from high school she attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., and studied studied education and psychology. Her love and desire to travel was not going to keep her stateside and she took the opportunity to travel the world while teaching at American military bases in Germany. Her travels took her to the Middle East and all parts of Europe, from the Berlin Wall to Scandinavia”. She was proud of going to Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. Upon moving back to the United States, she returned to upper midwest and a chance encounter on a golf course in Stanley, North Dakota led to her meeting the love of her life, Dorrance. A romance brewed and they were married after a fews years of courtship. They moved to the Gallatin Canyon where Janice taught in a small rural school house and Dorrance attended Montana State. Despite their love of the mountains, they moved to North Dakota and daughter Liv was born in 1972. A whirlwind of moves occurred over the next 20 years taking Jan and Dorrance from Fargo, to Willmar, Zumbrota MN, Redfield, SD, Decorah, IA and Rochester, MN.

Decorah, Iowa was truly their home and many great friendships grew from their time there. Janice worked at Happiness Is Gift Shop for many years always greeting those that came in with a smile and a story.Janice will be remembered for her kindness and generosity. Her love for her family and friends was unmatched and there was not a person she could not strike up a conversation with. She acted with love and grace and visits with her grandkids were activities everyone will always cherish.

Survivors include her son, Andrew (Shana) Davick of Byron, Minn.; and daughter, Liv (Chris) Davick Olivere of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Brendan and Liliana; one brother, Jerry (Linda) Berntson of Burnsville, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents Les and Agnes, and her brother Gene.
