John Magner, 89, of Cedar Rapids, (formerly of Decorah) died Thursday, June 6, 2019, at his home in Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his family. A funeral service was at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial was in the St. Bridget Cemetery in Bluffton. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 10 a.m. at the church Tuesday morning. Memorials may be made to the family.
John Victor Magner was born Feb. 16, 1930, the son of John and Elizabeth (Malone) Magner in Waukon. He graduated from St. Pats in Waukon. John married Bernadette Courtney May 26, 1953, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Bluffton. Together they had seven children. John worked for Luther College as a plumber for most of his life until retiring. He then took a job at Eastern Star Nursing Home which he loved. He enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions and dearly loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by wife: Bernadette; seven children: Judy of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Dennis) Maulson of Waterloo, John T of Edina, Minn., Jeff (Theresa) of Omaha, Neb., Jerry (Sherie) of Cedar Rapids, Joe (Amy) of Cedar Rapids, and Jean (Tom) Vogel of Eagan, Minn.; 10 grandchildren: Tanya (Jason) Sbiral, Tammy Maulson, Trisha (Jeff) Dean, Tess (Max) Kuenstling, Andy Magner, Courtney Magner, Michael Magner, Katie Magner, Sophia Vogel; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary (Pat) Donovan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth (Malone) Magner; in-law:: Terrance and Mabel Courtney, Parnell Courtney, Bill and Ann McKenna, Paul, Iona and Mary Courtney, Peter and Ila Courtney
