John A. Regan Jr., 74, of Waukon, IA, died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, in rural Waukon.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon with Fr. John Moser and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating and burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the church. Masks are required. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

John Arthur Regan, Jr. was born on July 8, 1947, in Decorah, Iowa the son of John A., Sr. and Kathleen (Hovden) Regan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon. John attended Howard Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1966. After graduation, John enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years. On Nov. 27, 1970, he married Diane M. Mathis at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry; they had three children: Jack, Marlene, and Jacob. John farmed with his dad and his brother Jim all his life.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Lycurgus Church until it closed then became a member at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, where he was on the church council and various other church boards. John was a proud member of the Waukon VFW Post 4117, serving as commander many times throughout his life. He also belonged to the Allamakee Antique Auto Club and owned many antique cars throughout his life; Fords were his most beloved. John loved going to car races and tractor pulls, including watching his uncle Marvin Hovden pull! He enjoyed farm progress shows and going deer hunting with the “Ol’ Milkhouse Crew”.

John was a very hardworking and meticulous man in everything he did. Most of all, he loved his eight grandchildren and loved going to watch their sporting events. He will be greatly missed!

He is survived by his children: Marlene (Darrin) Lonning and Jack (Amy) Regan, both of Waukon; his mother Kay Regan of Decorah; eight grandchildren; and siblings: Ann Roed of Waukon, Chris Hovden of Cresco, Jim (Linda) Regan of Waukon, Margaret “Peggy” Regan of Decorah, and Laurie (Craig) Zadra of Rice Lake, Wis.

John was preceded in death by his dad John, Sr.; son Jacob Regan; a sister Connie Kay Regan; and two brothers-in-law: Dennis Hovden and Ed Roed.

Honorary casketbearers are members of the Allamakee Car Club and the Ol’ Milkhouse Crew. Casketbearers are Carson, Raleigh, and Kreaton Lonning, Jakob and Jaxon Regan, Brennan Hartley, Blake Zadra, and Andrew and Brad Hovden.
