Joseph Panoch, 84, of rural Castalia, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Organist was Diane Stee. Cantor was Brandi Hemesath. Lector was Michael Panoch. Offertory gift bearers were Marissa Foels and Colton Goza. Casket bearers were Mark Kirkeby, William Panoch, Michael Panoch, Joe Scholbrock, Allan Tschida and Chuck Largey. Interment was at Frankville Cemetery, Frankville. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.
Joseph (Joe) James Panach was born March 6, 1933, the son of Joseph William Panoch and Rose Ann (Bilek) Panoch, in Lourdes. He attended and graduated from New Hampton High School. Joe married Jane Ann Meyer April 26, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. Joe worked at Oliver’s Manufacturing in Charles City and farmed near the New Hampton area, and later farmed near Postville and Castalia areas. Joe and Jane bought the current farm near Franksville 45 years ago, Oct. 26, 1972. Joe enjoyed turtle hunting and listening to polka music. His pride and joy was his granddaughter Marissa, known to him as “Little One.” In his two years at the Postville Good Samaritan Center, he was always known to be so thankful to the nurses.
Joseph is survived by his children, James Panoch, Castalia and JoEllen (Loren) Foels, Postville; one granddaughter, Marissa Foels, Postville; sister, Gigi Wollemberg, Rochester, Minn.; brother, Ray (Carol) Panoch, New Hampton; sister-in-law, Nancy Panoch, Punta Gorda, Fla.; along with many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, April 2, 2008; parents, Joseph and RoseAnn (Bilek) Panoch; sister, Lorraine Scholbrock; brothers, Ron, Leland and Donnie Panoch; mother and father-in-law, Alfred and Ella Meyer; brothers-in-law: Dean (Eilene) Meyer, Dale (Evelyn) Meyer, Marvin Scholbrock and Norman Wollenberg; sister, Rosemarie Blong.
